Overview

Amway is the company that essentially wrote the legal rulebook for the whole MLM industry. It is one of the oldest and largest direct sellers in the world, best known for its Nutrilite supplements and Artistry skincare, sold through millions of independent business owners (IBOs).

History & controversies

In 1979, after a four-year case, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission ruled that Amway's multi-level model was a legitimate business, not an illegal pyramid scheme, because pay was tied to real product sales rather than pure recruitment. The same ruling ordered Amway to stop misrepresenting how much money the average distributor makes. That decision — and Amway's "70% rule" (you must sell most of what you buy) — became the template regulators still use to separate legal MLMs from pyramids.

Amway is about as "legitimate" as network marketing gets on paper. The real caution isn't legality — it's the low odds and the extra costs. What you can realistically earn
