Net income = everything you earn (retail profit plus any team/override commission) minus everything you spend (starter kit, monthly product/auto-ship, samples, events, ads and travel) over the same period. Most "income" figures quoted in MLM are gross — before those costs — which is why so many distributors are surprised to find they actually lost money.
It is only as accurate as the numbers you put in — it is a planning tool, not a promise. Use realistic figures (get the exact costs from the company in writing) and it will show a fair estimate of your net for the period. Company income disclosures consistently show most participants earn little and many lose money after costs.
Because it counts the ongoing costs the recruiting presentation tends to skip — the monthly minimum purchase, samples, events and travel. For many new distributors those costs are higher than their commissions while they are still learning to sell, which is exactly why the honest net is often negative in the first year.
